With all the hype about weights, resistance training, HIIT, marathon events and fun runs, it’s easy to overlook the importance of building and maintaining good core strength. Core Strength refers not only to the strength of our various abdominal muscles (I can tell you’re thinking 6-pack, washboard abs here) but also the muscles in posterior chain, in our back. Having sound core strength is vital so that we can perform daily tasks with greater ease and without risking injury. Some benefits of having sound core strength in particular include:
- Improved posture
- Reduced or prevention of lower back pain
- Improved stability
- Improved sports performance (if the core is strong then other muscles won’t have to overcompensate and can focus on sport-specific tasks)
- Better Breathing (through strengthening of the intercostals)
You will be hard-pressed to find an elite athlete who’s training regime does not include a core strength maintenance component.
So while you might find to cold outside at the moment to go for a run/walk/cycle, why not start some work on your core strength? Try this core workout in the comfort of your own home.
